The International Council of Museums (ICOM) was created in 1946 and representing museums and museum professionals, is committed to the promotion and protection of natural and cultural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible. With a unique network of over 37,000 members in 171 countries, ICOM is active in a wide range of museum-and heritage- related disciplines.
ICOM maintains formal relations with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and has a consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). ICOM works in collaboration with organisations such as WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), and WCP (World Customs Organization), to carry out its international public service missions, especially regarding mediation, the fight against illicit traffic in cultural goods, and cultural property protection in case of natural disaster or armed conflict. ICOM is also one of the four founding members of the Blue Shield. Through its numerous programmes, ICOM has the ability to mobilise expert networks in the field of cultural heritage from all over the world.
In 2013, ICOM created the first International Observatory on Illicit Traffic in Cultural Goods, placing again formally the fight against this trend at the heart of its public service missions.

Le Conseil international des musées (ICOM), créé en 1946 et représentant les musées et les professionnels des musées, s’engage dans la promotion et la protection du patrimoine culturel et naturel, présent et futur, matériel et immatériel. Avec 37,000 membres dans 141 pays, l’ICOM est un réseau unique, actif dans de nombreux domaines en lien avec les musées et le patrimoine.
L’ICOM entretient des relations formelles avec l’UNESCO et bénéficie d’un statut consultatif au sein du Conseil économique et social des Nations unies (ECOSOC). L’ICOM travaille en collaboration, avec des organisations comme l’OMPI (Organisation mondiale de la propriété intellectuelle) et l’OMD (Organisation mondiale des douanes) afin de mener à bien ses missions de service public international, particulièrement en ce qui concerne la médiation, la lutte contre le trafic illicite de biens culturels, et la protection du patrimoine en cas de catastrophe naturelle ou de conflit armé. L’ICOM est notamment un des quatre membres fondateurs du Bouclier Bleu. À travers ses nombreux programmes, l’ICOM a la possibilité de mobiliser des experts du monde entier dans le domaine du patrimoine culturel.
En 2013, l’ICOM a créé le premier Observatoire international du trafic illicite des biens culturel, plaçant ainsi expressément une fois de plus la lutte contre cette tendance au cœur de ses missions de service public.
