The Basel Institute on Governance is an independent not-for-profit competence centre specialised in corruption prevention and public governance, corporate governance and compliance, anti-money laundering, criminal law enforcement and the recovery of stolen assets. Based in Switzerland, the Institute's multidisciplinary and international team works around the world with public and private organisations towards its mission of tangibly improving the quality of governance globally, in line with relevant international standards and good practices. The Institute is composed of four divisions, the International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR), the division for Public Governance, the division for Corporate Governance and Compliance, and the International Centre for Collective Action (ICCA).

Through the work on collective action, the Basel Institute is also actively engaged in promoting the development of industry standards in arts trade to address a range of  potential integrity concerns in the sector. This topic was addressed in an international conference held in 2009 and a series of meetings among key players in this area. The preliminary findings of this initiative are summarised in the Basel Institute's Working Paper No. 12, "Basel Art Trade Guidelines".
