Harn Museum of Art mission statement: The University of Florida’s Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art collaborates with university and community partners to inspire, educate and enrich people’s lives through art. The museum brings the joy of experiencing great works of art to diverse university, community, national and global audiences through relevant and enlightening art collections, exhibitions and learning opportunities.
General information on the Harn Museum of Art: Founded in 1990, the Harn Museum of Art is an integral part of the University of Florida. The Harn contributes to an interconnected, international community by integrating the arts and culture into curricula throughout the university’s system of colleges and centers. Its holdings include more than 9,000 works in five main collecting areas: Asian art, African art, photography, modern art of the Americas and Europe, and international contemporary art. The museum also has significant holdings of Ancient American and Oceanic art and works on paper. In addition to rotating installations drawn from its permanent collection, the Harn organizes traveling exhibitions, public lectures, panel discussions, academic symposia and educational programs for adults, students and children.
The Harn Museum of Art has been continuously accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1997, and its directors is an active member of the Association of Art Museum Directors. The museum complies with the professional practices of AAM and AAMD with regard to acquisitions, deaccessioning and collection care.
